During GDR times, Plattenbau and Plattenbau areas were seen as an important component in producing socialist citizens, whereas after German Unity this building type and its areas turned into one of the symbols of failure of the GDR urban policies (see Hannemann, 2005;Richter, 2006). To simply translate Plattenbau with 'industrialised building type of the GDR' or similar half sentences captures but a fragment of the politically charged content of this notion.…”
