Show more

“…25 High-temperature treatment of columbite/tantalite with chlorine gas or carbon tetrachloride yields Nb V /Ta V Cl 5 , bypassing the environmentally hazardous HF ore dissolution. 14,24,26 Separating the mixed Nb/Ta chlorides is reported at temperatures exceeding 500 °C by selective reduction of gaseous NbCl 5 to solid NbCl 3 by hydrogen reduction 26 or fractional distillation at 250 °C, 27 separating NbCl 5 from gaseous TaCl 5 . Such high-temperature procedures are energy intensive and require specialized corrosion-and temperature-resistant equipment.…”

“…Emerging approaches target the replacement of Nb/Ta fluoride processing with chlorine processing, such as a report showing the direct transformation of Nb/Ta-containing ores into Nb V /Ta V chlorides, as well a recent report showing the formation of a TaCl 5 species for Ta recycling by selective solvent extraction .
