The morphological features of polychaete ovarian morphology and oogenesis are reviewed. Some basic information on ovarian structure and/or oogenesis is known for slightly more than half of recognized polychaete families although comprehensive studies of oogenesis have been conducted on $0.1% of described species. Relative to other major metazoan groups, ovarian morphology is highly variable in the Polychaeta. While some species appear to lack a defined ovary, most have paired organs that are segmentally repeated to varying degrees depending on the family. Ovaries vary widely in their location but are most frequently associated with the coelomic peritoneum, parapodial connective tissue, or elements of the circulatory system. The structural complexity of the ovary is correlated with the type of oogenesis expressed by the species. In some polychaetes, extraovarian oogenesis occurs in which previtellogenic oocytes are released into the coelom from a simple ovary where differentiation occurs in a solitary fashion or in association with nurse cells or follicle cells. In other species, intraovarian oogenesis occurs in which oocytes undergo vitellogenesis within the ovary, often in association with follicle cells that may provide nutrition. Vitellogenesis probably includes both autosynthetic and heterosynthetic processes; autosynthesis involves the manufacture of yolk bodies via the proteosynthetic organelles of the oocyte whereas heterosynthesis involves the extraovarian production of female-specific yolk proteins that are incorporated into the oocyte through a receptor-mediated process of endocytosis. Variation in the speed of egg production varies widely and appears to be correlated with the vitellogenic mechanism employed. Mature ova display a wide range of egg envelope morphologies that often show some intrafamilial similarities.

Two types of oogenesis have evolved in polychaetes: one (extraovarian) in which germ cells are ovulated into the coelomic cavity where they undergo vitellogenesis, and another (intraovarian) in which the germ cells are released from the ovary after or near the completion of vitellogenesis. There are many mechanisms of yolk synthesis and significant variation as to the sources of yolk precursors, their route of entry into developing oocytes, and the oocytic organelles involved in yolk synthesis. The evolution of the coelom and its role in nutrient storage and transfer, as well as the origin of germ cells, are intimately related to the evolution of vitellogenic mechanisms in polychaetes. Comparative studies have revealed a correlation between mechanisms of yolk synthesis and the breeding patterns of polychaetes with the rate and type of vitellogenesis being related to the frequency of breeding. Vitellogenic mechanisms in polychaetes are compared with those of other metazoans in an effort to better understand the evolution of this important process and to identify primitive and derived features of yolk synthesis within the Polychaeta.

Polarized oogenic cysts are clonal syncytia in which cellular compartments (cystocytes) differentiate as either oocytes or nurse cells-supportive germ cells that transport material to the oocyte through cytoplasmic bridges. Although polarized cysts have evolved independently in several animal phyla, most research on this phenomenon has focused on insects, particularly Drosophila melanogaster. To provide a foundation for comparative studies of cyst polarization, we have examined the coelomic development of polarized cysts in an annelid worm, Ophryotrocha labronica, using a variety of microscopic techniques. This species has elegantly simple cysts, each consisting of two interconnected cells (one oocyte and one nurse cell) free of somatic follicular tissue. These cysts arise from segmental ovaries, but are released to the coelom early in oogenesis, where they carry out most of their development. Although the oocyte remains transcriptionally active through oogenesis, nurse cells in this species are robust biosynthetic factories, with highly polyploid nuclei, enormous nucleoli, numerous mitochondria, and abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum. Ultimately, the nurse cell dumps its cytoplasm into oocyte, detaches, and undergoes programmed cell death. Although in insects, and possibly some polychaetes, the overall polarity of the cyst is linked to the specification of future embryonic axes in the oocyte, in Ophryotrocha this appears not to be the case. Our findings provide a detailed analysis of cyst development, addressing earlier misconceptions in the literature and adding new insights. This foundation shows the potential of Ophryotrocha labronica as a model system for further experimental analysis of nurse cell-oocyte differentiation.
