Die Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS)

Abstract: The new AIS (Abbreviated Injury Scale) was released with an update by the AAAM (Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine) in 2008. It is a universal scoring system in the field of trauma applicable in clinic and research. In engineering it is used as a classification system for vehicle safety. The AIS can therefore be considered as an international, interdisciplinary and universal code of injury severity. This review focuses on a historical overview, potential applications and new coding options … Show more

“…All trauma patients in the ED were treated according to the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS ® American College of Surgeons, Chicago, IL, USA) standard and the polytrauma guidelines [25]. Injury severity from trauma was calculated using the Injury Severity Score (ISS) based on the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) score which assigns each injury a severity level between 1 (mild) and 6 (maximum) in different regions (head, face, thorax, abdomen, extremities and external injuries) [26,27]. The New Injury Severity Score (NISS) was calculated to better correlate the assessment measure with the polytrauma of the patients [28].…”

“…Management of multiple trauma is performed in an interdisciplinary team (trauma surgeons, anesthesiologist, radiologist, nurses) in concordance to the rules of ATLS ® [5]. The severity of a patient's injury was analyzed using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), the Injury Severity Score (ISS), and the New Injury Severity Score (NISS) [19,20]. To calculate a mortality prognosis RISC II Score (Revised Injury Severity Classification, Version 2) was used [21].…”
