Dictogloss Technique

Abstract

Research on second language acquisition has shown that learners' attention to formal aspects of languages is of the utmost importance in an otherwise communicative classroom. Research has shown that keeping a focus on both form and meaning is difficult due to the limited capacities of human processing. This entry briefly describes the dictogloss technique, in which formal aspects of language may be highlighted when learners are engaged in completing communicative tasks. Research carried out using this technique is summarized and pedagogical implications are also considered.
