The aim of this study was to investigate the types, levels and distribution of pesticide residues in Eastern Lake Tanganyika basin in Tanzania. Water, soil and sediments samples were collected from various sites in Kigoma region. Analyses of cleaned sample extracts were performed using gas chromatographyelectron capture detection (GC-ECD) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Six pesticide residues and metabolites were detected, namely, p,p '-DDT, o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, diazinon and chlorpyrifos. DDT, DDD and DDE were the predominantly detected compounds in all of the samples. Diazinon and chlorpyrifos were detected in soil samples only. The highest concentrations of total DDT in sediments and soil ranged from 10.02 to 116 µg/kg dry weight (dw) and 7.5 to 564.2 µg/kg dw, respectively. Chlorpyrifos and diazinon had concentrations up to 36 and 184 µg/kg dw, respectively. The concentrations of DDT residues were greater in soil samples than in sediments. The highest concentrations of DDT residues were detected in soil samples. The ratios of (p,p'-DDE + p,p'-DDD)/p,p'-DDT indicated recent inputs in most samples. The study reveals that there were recent uses of DDT, diazinon and chlorpyrifos in the region. Continued use of DDT indicates risks and may result into serious environmental problems. The area therefore needs serious environmental monitoring.

Background.Production of foods safe for consumption is an important issue worldwide. Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) are often used to preserve crops. Their use can have serious impacts on human health.Objectives.This research aims at assessing OCP residues in food samples from markets in Lagos in southwestern Nigeria and their risk to human health.Methods.Sixteen food samples were collected from Lagos, Nigeria and analyzed for organochlorine pesticide residues. Extraction was performed using an ultrasonicator, and analysis was carried out using a gas chromatograph-electron capture detector. Risk assessment was carried out by determining the hazard quotient.Results.Results of the OCP residues found in the foods were generally low, with dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) having the highest residue concentration. The concentration of p,p'-DDE was as high as 110 ng/g in pulses and 123 ng/g in Cameroon and chili peppers. The risk index was <1 in most cases, with the exception of dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (p,p'-DDD) in fruits for children.Discussion.The results were generally lower than what has been documented in other parts of the world and suggest that consumption of the foods investigated in the present study in Nigeria may be considered safe for the 13 OCPs investigated.Conclusions.There is a need for continuous monitoring of these OCPs and investigation of carbamate and phosphate pesticide residues since they are more widely used in farming practices in Nigeria.

Organochlorine Pesticide (OCP) residue were qualitatively and quantitatively determined using Gas Chromatography-Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD) and their potential health risks assessed in kolanut (Cola nitida) samples from selected markets in Osun State, Southwestern Nigeria. Health risk estimates were analyzed using Estimated Average Daily Intake (EADI) and Hazard Index (HI) with risk categorized for non-carcinogenic health effects. A total of 17 OCPs were identified and their residues were detected in all the kolanut samples analyzed. The results showed that the mean concentration of p,p-DDE, Dieldrin, Endosulfan, and Lindane were 0.480±1.106 mg kg-1 , 0.310±0.442 mg kg-1 , 0.243±0.144 mg kg-1 and 0.044±0.041 mg kg-1 respectively. Among the OCPs analyzed, p,p-DDE and α-HCH were the dominant isomers for DDT and HCH, respectively. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) results showed that out of the 17 OCPs detected, p,p-DDE,
