Diatoms of the Antarctic – Environmental Interpretation of the Middle Pliocene at Site 697

Abstract: The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) was an international cooperative effort that conducted 110 expeditions and drilled 2000 drill holes (IODP website). Site 697 is a drill hole located in the Weddell Sea within the Jane Basin and is 3480 meters below sea level. Site 697 is the deepest of a three-site depth transect of the South Orkney microcontinent (SOM) drilled during ODP Leg 113 (Barker, Kennett et al., 1988)[See O'Connell, Fig. 1, this volume].
