Diatoms of modern bottom sediments in Siberian arctic

Abstract: Abstract-The investigation of the species composition and ecology of diatoms of modern bottom sediments in water bodies of arctic polygonal tundra in three subregions of North Yakutiya has been carried out. As a result, 161 taxons of diatoms were determined; the determinant role of the depth, conductivity, pH of the water, and geographic latitude in their distribution was confirmed, and two complexes of species with respect to the leading abiotic factors were distinguished. The diatoms of the first complex pre… Show more

“…Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) with detrending by segments was performed on the macrozoobenthos data (rare taxa downweighted) to explore the main pattern of taxonomic variation among sites and to determine the lengths of the sampled environmental gradients, from which we decided whether unimodal or linear statistical techniques would be the most appropriate for the data analysis (Birks 1995;Palagushkina et al 2012Palagushkina et al , 2017Frolova et al 2013). The gradient length of species scores was relatively long.…”

“…Furthermore, IWP ponds and thermokarst lakes are abundant aquatic ecosystem types in the Arctic (Grosse et al, 2013). They are hotspots of biological activity and diversity (Smol and Douglas, 2007), providing diverse habitats for microorganisms, plants, birds, and aquatic communities (Palagushkina et al, 2012;Bobrov et al, 2013;De Klerk et al, 2014). Continuous organic matter accumulation and preservation during syngenetic permafrost aggradation make northern IWPs a valuable climate and environmental archive.…”

“…At the present state of knowledge, biological indicators from aquatic (chironomids, diatoms, ostracods, cladocera) and terrestrial environments (pollen, plant macrofossils) are the most reliable proxies, because they react sensitively to climate change and define different aspects of environments, which should be assessed together for reliable reconstructions (Smol et al, 2005;Solovieva et al, 2005Solovieva et al, , 2008Kienast et al, 2011;Self et al, 2011;Palagushkina et al, 2012;Pestryakova et al, 2012). The basis, however, of all quantitative reconstruction approaches are regional calibration datasets from which the empirical reconstruction models (i.e.…”
