Diatom Stratigraphy and Human Settlement in Minnesota

Abstract: A b s t r a c tFossil diatom assemblages in short cores of lake sediment from nine lacustrine environments (seven lakes) in Minnesota and South Dakota show the ecological reaction of freshwater diatoms to limnologic changes associated with enrichment following European-American settlement. The time of settlement is stratigraphically determined by an increase in the proportion of Ambrosia (ragweed) pollen, which signals late 19th century land clearance and cultivation in this region. In some cases other stratig… Show more

“…The first to appear was Stephanodiscus minutulus between 1860 and 1870 ( Figure 6). This taxon frequently becomes abundant in the spring diatom bloom of lakes enriched in phosphorus (Bradbury 1975(Bradbury , 1988. The arrival of Stephanodiscus minutulus coincides with the extensive settlement of Upper Klamath Lake.…”

“…Stephanodiscus minutulus competed well for silicon but needed a plentiful supply of P and hence, it was more common in waters with relatively low silicon/phosphorus ratios (Kilham and Kilham, 1978). This species became frequently abundant in a spring diatom bloom of lakes enriched in P (Bradbury, 1975(Bradbury, , 1988. Stephanodiscus taxa were dominant in winter and spring when increased turbulence could suspend these relatively heavy diatoms, therefore they could denote moist winters and springs with active circulation (cf.…”

“…Nearly all valves examined by SEM had intact cribra over the internal openings of the areolae, although spines were commonly broken. The low accumulation rates may reflect populations reduced by grazing, but this is felt to be unlikely as Stephanodiscus commonly peaks prior to zooplankton increases (Bradbury, 1975).…”

“…European lakes has been well documented (e.g. Haworth, 1972;Bradbury, 1975;Battarbee, 1978Battarbee, , 1986aDigerfelt, H~kansson & Persson, 1980;Engstrom, Swain & Kingston, 1985;Fritz, 1989). There is, however, taxonomic uncertainty surrounding the genus and many workers, both in sediment and phytoplankton studies, have grouped species together under a variety of epithets (e.g.…”
