Diaper dermatitis and advances in diaper technology

Abstract: During the last decade, a number of technological innovations in disposable diaper designs and materials have aimed at reducing dermatological problems in the diaper area. The introduction of absorbent gelling materials led to a decrease in skin overhydration and made possible a more beneficial pH in the diaper area. A retrospective evaluation of clinical studies conducted before and after the introduction of absorbent gelling materials confirms that utilization of these materials has been associated with a ma… Show more

“…One interesting feature of the volume phase transition is that it exhibits hysteresis, a feature that distinguishes it from the familiar liquid-gas phase transition [42,13]. These large volume changes have found use in various artificial devices including disposable diapers [37], drug delivery devices [35,10] and chemical actuators [14,22]. Gels abound in nature are thought to play an important role in certain physiological systems [53,47].…”

“…The introduction of absorbent gels in diapers has been associated with a significant reduction in the severity and incidence of irritant diaper dermatitis 6. One of the most common irritants causing dermatitis is fecal proteases and lipases, which can weaken the physical integrity of the skin 10.…”

“…Vaseline known being with moisturising as well as water impermeability properties protect the skin [5,10]. In one study, 0 -18 month old children with diaper dermatit were also treated with zinc oxide/vaseline containing diaper as decreased the ratio and severity of diaper dermatit [19,24,25]. In other study diaper containing vaseline was seen to reduce the severity and redness in the 0 -18 month old children with diaper dermatit [20].…”
