Dianthus borbonicus (Caryophyllaceae), a new species from Sicily

Abstract: Dianthus borbonicus a new species occurring in North-Western Sicily is described and illustrated. It is a rare chasmophyte belonging to the D. sylvestris group, which is exclusive of a rupestrian stand near Rocca Busambra (Ficuzza). Its macro- and micromorphological features (seed testa sculptures, and leaf anatomy), ecology, conservation status and a comparison with the related species are provided too.

“…However, calyx measurements can provide a proxy for petal size, since the two structures are correlated in this complex (Terlević & al., 2023). Overall, 33 morphological characters were measured, including those previously used to discriminate taxa belonging to the Dianthus virgineus complex (Tutin & Walters, 1993; Bacchetta & al., 2010; Brullo & Guarino, 2017). The complete list of measured traits, along with information on their characteristics and dimensionality, is provided in (Table 1).…”

“…The morphological discrimination among taxa within this complex was traditionally based on features regarding calyx, corolla, and epicalyx scales (Tutin & Walters, 1993). In more recent Floras and revisions, these characters were still considered useful (Bacchetta & al., 2010; Tison & de Foucault, 2014; Brullo & Guarino, 2017, 2019). For instance, wild populations growing in continental southern France have been attributed to an alpine or to a mediterranean species based on the number of epicalyx scales (Tison & de Foucault, 2014).…”

“…These references already covered about 90% of the Dianthus species. Further publications reporting taxonomic data were used, such as descriptions of new species (Brullo et al 2000;Shaulo and Erst 2011;Brullo et al 2015;Son et al 2017), nomenclatural notes on certain species or species groups (Peruzzi and Gargano 2006;Bacchetta et al 2010) and studies on species in single countries (Iamonico 2013;Lazkov 2016). Many new Dianthus species were described from Turkey in the last 10-15 years, which were considered through the respective publications (Menemen and Hamzaoğlu 2000;İlçim et al 2013;Deniz et al 2016).…”
