Diamond Wheel Dressing: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: This paper provides a comprehensive review on the dressing techniques of diamond grinding wheels. The common techniques with different tools were discussed in detail, which included the bonded SiC and diamond abrasive tools, loose abrasives, soft-elastic abrasive belts, and profiled diamond wheels. Meanwhile, laser dressing, electrical discharge dressing (EDD), and electrolytic in-process dressing (ELID) were also addressed. Some critical problems in the above dressing techniques were then analyzed and summari… Show more

“…CBN is the second hardest after diamond. The abrasive composite layer on a superabrasive wheel is always limited within a thin rim or layer to reduce the usage amount of costly diamond or CBN, and this structure also helps to the design of very high-speed wheels used for high removal rates (Marinescu et al 2004;Ding et al 2017;Guo et al 2014;). Diamond (Marinescu et al 2004) The shape of the diamond crystals can be octahedral, dodecahedral, or hexahedral.…”

“…Grinding wheel should be well prepared to meet the requirement of high precision grinding before normal grinding operation (Marinescu et al 2004;Ding et al 2017;Guo et al 2014). This process includes cleaning, truing, and dressing process (Marinescu et al 2004;Ding et al 2017;Chen et al 2005).…”

“…Moreover, a monolayer electroplated or brazed CBN grinding wheel has the advantages of high precision machining, with good balance between embedding strength and protruding height, as well as a controllable layout of the abrasive pattern [10,11]. The optimization of the abrasive pattern layout has also improved the grinding performance [12][13][14][15][16][17].…”
