Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents with Bipolar Disorder: Results from a Pilot Randomized Trial

Abstract: DBT may offer promise as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy in the treatment of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation for adolescents with BP. The DBT focus on commitment to treatment may be important for the treatment of early-onset BP. Larger controlled trials are needed to establish the efficacy of this approach, examine impact on suicidal behavior, and demonstrate cost effectiveness.

“…In recent years, an accumulating body of evidence similarly supports the use of manualized psychotherapies for the treatment of PBD. A recent review highlighted 13 unique studies 170 and three studies published since that review further strengthen the evidence base, 171174 whereas one additional study offers mixed evidence. 175 The category of family psychoeducation plus skill building can be considered as a well-established treatment, meaning that two or more research groups have, via independent RCTs, demonstrated efficacy.…”

“…Although both treatment groups demonstrated high acceptability, adolescents in DBT attended more sessions and demonstrated greater improvement in depressive (but not manic) symptoms and suicidal ideation. 27 Thus, DBT seems to be a promising treatment of adolescent BPSD, particularly for depressive symptoms.…”

DBT was modeled as a 1-year treatment consisting of 18 family skills training (conducted with individual family units) and 18 individual skills sessions.…”
