Dialectic Antidotes to Critics of the Technology Acceptance Model: Conceptual, Methodological, and Replication Treatments for Behavioural Modelling in Technology-Mediated Environments

Abstract: The technology acceptance model (TAM) is a prominent and parsimonious conceptual lens that is often applied for behavioural modelling in technology-mediated environments. However, TAM has received a great deal of criticism in recent years. This article aims to address some of the most pertinent issues confronting TAM through a rejoinder that offers dialectic antidotes-in the form of conceptual, methodological, and replication treatmentsto support the continued use of TAM to understand the peculiarities of user… Show more

“…It is hoped that this conceptual framework, which to the best of knowledge of the authors is the first to conceptually and contextually integrate the two grand theories of technology acceptance to better explain how exactly a particular technology (or technologically-mediated systems, and in this case, non-profits' social media) can be designed to create and satisfy expectancies and conditions required for adoption, will help non-profits to develop effective social media strategies that widen their reach to and in non-urban communities and thus dramatically increase their ability to initiate, innovate, and deliver non-profit activities. In doing so, this paper also answers the call by Lim (2018aLim ( , 2018b in the Australasian Journal of Information Systems to revisit and reposition existing theories in information systems and technology as impetuses for greater disciplinary and managerial progress.…”

“…In order for academics to contribute to the agenda of overcoming the digital divide between urban and non-urban communities and between for-profit and non-profit organizations, this paper contends that the integration and contextualization of grand theories of technology acceptance is especially important and must be considered. Specifically, the integration of grand theories will overcome the criticism of theoretical simplicity, which occurs when each theory is taken individually, whereas the contextualization of grand theories will allow for greater practical value to emerge from theorization in academic research (Lim, 2018a(Lim, , 2018b.…”

“…The rejoinder by Lim (2018) addresses some of the most pertinent issues confronting the technology acceptance model (TAM) by reviewing the model's critiques and responding to those critiques with dialectic antidotes in the form of conceptual, methodological, and replication treatments. These treatments, which are useful and relevant for behavioural modelling, support the continued use of the TAM to understand the peculiarities of user interactions with technology in technology-mediated environments.…”

“…A Meta-analysis of TAM showed that while TAM is a useful model for user behaviour on users' intention to use, it needs to be used as the base model (King and He 2006). TAM should be extended using other theories and variables to support contemporary tech-mediated context (Lim 2018). This paper used TAM as a fundamental model and integrated UGT framework (Katz et al 1973) as complementary to TAM.…”

“…Second, while TAM and UGT have been used separately in different contexts, no study covered the integration of these models to establish a stronger grounding to explore customer use behaviour. Finally, studies suggested that TAM requires integration of personal and social, security, and behavioural control factors to include contemporary tech-mediated context (Lim 2018) which is captured in this paper through using UGT.…”
