Diagnostic Value of the Nuclear Matrix Protein 22 Test and Urine Cytology in Upper Tract Urothelial Tumors

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the diagnostic value of the nuclear matrix protein 22 (NMP22) test in comparison to urine cytology for the detection of upper tract urothelial carcinoma. Patients and Methods: Patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract (n = 34) and patients with renal calculosis (n = 25) were included in this study. Voided urine samples and separated catheter urine specimens were assayed for NMP22 and cytological examination. Results: The sensitivity of the NMP22 test in sepa… Show more

“…And yet their body weight status (mean BMI = 27.9 kg/m 2 , obesity prevalence = 32.7%) was similar to that of the 4 inactive US cohorts (74). Unfortunately, despite the fact that the PA levels of the abovementioned Spanish cohort was relatively high compared to current guidelines, this was not accompanied by a ‘healthy’ cardiometabolic profile.…”

“…2,3 Patients suspected of having UTUC need to receive invasive procedures such as computed tomography (CT) urography, retrograde pyelography, or ureteroscopy for a definitive diagnosis. Many researchers have tried to develop useful urinary markers to detect UTUC, 4,5 but urine cytology still remains the only non-invasive diagnostic marker recommended by many guidelines 6,7 although its sensitivity for detection of UTUC is as low as 40%. 8 Cell-free DNA in bodily fluids has huge potential in disease diagnosis.…”

“…Several studies have discussed the relevance of urine markers to detect UUT UC [ 3 , 5 , 6 ]. Still, urine cytology is the only marker, which is recommended by current guidelines, even if it is known to be less sensitive for the detection of UUT UC compared to UC of the bladder [ 2 ].…”
