Diagnostic Utility of Salivary Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) in Chronic Periodontitis: A Novel Approach

Abstract: Currently, diagnosis of chronic periodontitis is based on clinical methods which are cumbersome and have been shown to have inherent errors and drawbacks including inability to detect active disease. There is therefore an urgent need for a timely, cost-effective and less cumbersome method. Salivary matrix metalloproteinase-8 has been shown in some studies to be a promising bio-marker of chronic periodontitis. This was a case-control study conducted at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. It had 40 cases an… Show more

“…Preclinical diagnosis of a disease is an important part of modern medicine and general health and has led to great achievements in medical sciences [26]. Most of the participants were willing to be screened for their undetected medical conditions and monitor their disease, which is consistent with previous studies [18,23].…”

“…High blood pressure is a global issue and is present in 26.4% of the adult population worldwide and it would increase by 60% in 2025 [5,23]. This increased estimation in prevalence and related costs of the disease for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases needs a high level of preventive programs for effective control of these growing epidemics.…”

“…Oral health (including periodontal health) has been described as an important aspect of general health and a bi-directional relationship has been described between periodontal disease and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) [17]. Therefore, early detection and treatment of periodontal disease have become ever more important [18]. Periodontal health is maintained by the stability of the periodontal tissues and tissue integrity is maintained by a balance between matrix degradation and production, which is regulated mainly through the action of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in both normal and pathological tissues as well as in tissue remodelling states [18] [19].…”

“…This is in tandem with previous studies which have shown that there is actually an increase in the TIMP-1 levels at 3 and 6 months after phase I therapy. Increase in TIMP-1 levels may be attributed to a fall in the MMPs and attempts at resolution of the destructive inflammatory process which occurs immediately after non-surgical periodontal therapy [18].…”
