“…At a cut-off point of 345.65 U/mL, ca125 concentration provided a diagnostic sensitivity of 68.1% (specificity: 83.5%). Similar results were described by Ferrer et al 15 , who quantified tumour markers in samples of pleural fluid and serum from patients with mpes and benign pleural effusions. Those authors observed no significant Thymus (n = 2), kidney (n = 2), lung [mesothelioma (n = 2)], stomach (n = 1), pancreas (n = 1), skin [melanoma (n = 1)].…”

“…CA 19-9 increases in pleural fluids as a result of an antigenic reaction despite an invasion of serous membranes by a few tumor cells (21). While previous studies found low sensitivity but high specificity for Ca 19-9 level in malignant pleural fluids (1,9,14,15), only Kuralay et al determined both of them at high levels (19). In the present study, we found low sensitivity and high specificity of CA 19-9 level as well.…”

“…In our study, every tumor marker has a predominant distribution in a specific histological type of lung cancer (Table 4), which was consistent with other reports. 20,29 Therefore, a combination assay of the four tumor markers could provide more specific information, such as a higher sensitivity for lung cancer diagnosis independent of histological types. As shown in our results, a combination assay of SCC, CEA, Cyfra21-1 and NSE increased sensitivity to 43.4%, which was still low in diagnosing lung cancer but was higher than any other single tumor marker.…”
