Diagnostic predictive value of the Bladder EpiCheck test in the follow‐up of patients with non–muscle‐invasive bladder cancer

Abstract: Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the Bladder EpiCheck test in the follow‐up of patients with non–muscle‐invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and to compare it with the accuracy of urinary cytology, cystoscopy, and/or histology. Methods In total, 243 patients were enrolled in the current study. Patients were evaluated by voided urine cytology, by the Bladder EpiCheck test, and by white‐light cystoscopy. Results Overall sensitivity was 33.3% for cytology, 62.3% for Bla… Show more

“…EpiCheck presented higher sensitivity with a lower specificity when compared with cytology (62.3% vs. 33.3% and 86.3% vs. 98.6%, respectively). Similarly, EpiCheck was more sensitive in high-grade tumors, where the obtained NPV in this study was 82.9% [67]. As a pitfall, EpiCheck is costly and technically challenging in execution, but unlike other tests, the presence of inflammation in the urinary tract did not affect the sensitivity and specificity of EpiCheck [64,67].…”

“…During the study by Trenti et al [12], BE was tested on 243 patients, with 215 evaluable results (28 test failures excluded from the final analysis). Sixty-nine (32%) patients had an NMIBC recurrence.…”

“…Few studies have compared the sensitivity, PPV and NPV for both cytology and BE, and only one evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the combination of the two tests [12].…”

“…Bladder cancer is a common cancer of the urinary system and the ninth most common malignant tumor in the world [1]. The presence of bladder cancer cells in the urine provides important evidence for bladder cancer diagnosis [2]. One of the reasons for the low sensitivity of urine cytology is the interference of background cells and other impurities [3].…”
