Diagnostic potential of PET/CT using a 68Ga-labelled prostate-specific membrane antigen ligand in whole-body staging of renal cell carcinoma: initial experience

Abstract: Ga-PSMA PET/CT appears to be a promising method for detecting RCC metastases. However, no additional diagnostic value in assessing the primary tumour was found.

“…Notably, two (40%) of these patients had additional foci of radiotracer uptake (a total of 11 sites) that were suspicious for sites of metastases but lacked corresponding findings on conventional imaging. Similar results have since been reported using a gallium 68-labeled radiotracer targeting PSMA [7,8]. Combined, these data support a potential role for PSMA-targeted PET/CT to detect sites of otherwise clinically occult metastatic ccRCC.…”

“…PSMA PET imaging improves the detection rates for metastatic lesions in lymph nodes and bone, especially at low prostate-specific antigen levels (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20). In addition, favorable imaging properties have also been demonstrated in nonprostate cancers (21)(22)(23)(24)(25).…”

“…At least a dozen metastatic clear cell RCC cases have been published with a variety of PSMA-targeted PET radiotracers ( 111 In-J591, 68 Ga-PSMA-HBED-CC, and 18 F-DCFPyL [2-(3-(1carboxy-5-[(6-18 F-fluoro-pyridine-3-carbonyl)-amino]-pentyl)-ureido)pentanedioic acid]). Uptake has been demonstrated in primary tumors, lymph nodes, and bone metastases, with reported SUVs ranging between 1.7 and 35 (23,(57)(58)(59)(60)(61)(62)(63).…”
