Diagnostic Potential of miR-126, miR-143, miR-145, and miR-652 in Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Abstract: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is difficult to distinguish from reactive mesothelial proliferations (RMPs). It is uncertain whether miRNAs are useful biomarkers for differentiating MPM from RMPs. Thus, we screened with a quantitative RT-PCR (RT-qPCR)-based platform the expression of 742 miRNAs in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, preoperative diagnostic biopsy samples, surgically resected MPM specimens previously treated with chemotherapy, and corresponding non-neoplastic pleura (NNP), from five patient… Show more

“…Moreover, we could replicate some of the results obtained by other authors 6, 7, 1923 who attempted to define a set of miRNAs differentially expressed between MPM and non-MPM mesothelial tissues (Table 2). Although we found 18 miRNAs already linked with MPM, the fact that some of the results were not in agreement with what previously reported should not be surprising.…”

“…Accumulating studies suggest that circulating miRNAs may be used as potential molecular biomarkers for several disease conditions, including human malignancies (27–29). Chen et al reported that the expression profiles of plasma miRNAs in lung cancer, colorectal cancer and diabetic patients are different from those of healthy individuals, and proposed that miR-25 and miR-223 may be used as diagnostic markers for NSCLC (12).…”

“…As for the meta-analysis, a total of 11 publications (including this study) covering 15 studies were finally included in this meta-analysis [23,25,[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. Of all included articles, five publications were performed in Asian populations, whereas the remaining six articles were conducted in Caucasian populations.…”
