Diagnostic laparoscopic biopsy for intraabdominal tumors

Abstract: Improvements in imaging technology have resulted in an increase in the incidental detection of intraabdominal tumors. Diagnostic computed tomography (CT)- and ultrasound (US)-guided biopsy, while minimally invasive, often provides specimens that are insufficient for histological evaluation. Moreover, it can be difficult to perform because the location and size of the tumor. In such cases, laparoscopic biopsy is useful because it is less invasive than laparotomy, but more reliable than imaging-guided biopsy, to… Show more

“…The open surgical approach was replaced by laparoscopic techniques. The substantially high diagnostic accuracy stayed almost unchanged and recovery time became shorter, however general anesthesia was constantly required 6,8 . Percutaneous approach using imaging methods guidance provides the next possibility for obtaining tumorous tissue samples, this time without the necessity of general anesthesia.…”

“…Historically, establishing the diagnosis was associated with a surgical procedure using laparotomy or laparoscopy 6 . The advantage was enormously high diagnostic accuracy, on the other hand this approach is demanding for patients who also carry all risks connected to general anesthesia.…”

“…Algunos autores realizan estudio histológico por congelación y después de confirmar adecuada muestra, terminan la cirugía 20 . Este recurso puede ser útil; sin embargo, no es el protocolo en nuestra institución y como hemos descrito, todas las muestras fueron adecuadas para diagnóstico, resultado que nos parece relevante, pues la confirmación histológica del diagnóstico es el objetivo fundamental del procedimiento y está relacionado con la cantidad y calidad de la muestra obtenida.…”

“…Since the tumor was adjacent to the abdominal aorta and intestines, the patient did not undergo ultrasound-or CT-guided biopsy, given the anticipated difficulty in performing either procedure. 5 Instead, laparoscopic resection of the para-aortic tumor was planned, which would also allow a definite diagnosis.…”
