Diagnostic Imaging of Child Abuse

Abstract: The role of imaging in cases of child abuse is to identify the extent of physical injury when abuse is present and to elucidate all imaging findings that point to alternative diagnoses. Effective diagnostic imaging of child abuse rests on highquality technology as well as a full appreciation of the clinical and pathologic alterations occurring in abused children. This statement is a revision of the previous policy published in

“…30,31 Young children with AHT may be particularly at risk for ligamentous injuries that are often not apparent on plain radiography or CT but detectable on MRI. When MRI is performed, ligamentous injuries are detected in up to 78% of cases of AHT, compared to 46% of children with accidental trauma (not necessarily TBI) and 1% of children without trauma.…”

“…The use of physicians and other individuals in professional positions to convey messages related to HPV vaccination is likely to be especially persuasive to readers, given that HPV vaccine uptake has been shown to be associated with provider recommendation (Dempsey et al, 2006; Gerend Lee & Shepard, 2007; Kahn, Ding, Huang, Zimet, Rosenthal & Frazier, 2009). …”

“…Despite barriers, however, many parents show support for the vaccine (Constantine & Jerman, 2007; Horn, Howard, Waller & Ferris, 2010; Rosenthal et al, 2008; Stretch et al, 2008). Vaccine acceptance is associated with beliefs of susceptibility to HPV or cervical cancer, vaccine efficacy and provider recommendation (Dempsey, Zimet, Davis & Koutsky, 2006; Gerend, Lee & Shepherd, 2007; Kahn, 2009). …”

“…Radiographic skeletal survey and radionuclide images are complementary procedures for diagnosis and documenting this type of injury (Figure 3). The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed for diagnosing whenever typical skeletal injuries associated with extraskeletal injuries [8]. The MRI T2-weighted coronal images showing metaphyseal fractures of distal left femur and proximal bilateral tibias with extensive periosteal hemorrhage or edema favored child abuse, too.…”
