Diagnostic Exercise

Abstract: An 18-month-old cross-bred goat was presented with generalized erythema and thinning of the hair coat, as well as localized moderate scaling. Histopathological evaluation of skin biopsies showed hyperplasia and marked disruption of the infundibular epithelium owing to a predominant infiltrate of macrophages with multinucleated histiocytic giant cells and some lymphocytes, plasma cells, and eosinophils. Examination of peripheral blood and skin by polymerase chain reaction gave positive results for ovine herpesv… Show more

“…The distribution and the type of inflammation without presence of intralesional organisms narrowed the differential diagnoses considerably. Because the inflammation was vasocentric and the lesions were similar to that of a previous report of OvHV-2 dermatitis in a goat, 3 OvHV-2 was a plausible cause.…”

“…OvHV-2 infection does occur in goats, 4,5,7 though cases of dermatitis are infrequently reported. 3 This case demonstrates that OvHV-2 can cause dermatitis in goats. Vasotropism, which is a classic lesion of OvHV-2 MCF in cattle, was a feature of the dermatitis in this goat.…”

“…The lack of infectivity is likely because the virus remains cell-associated in these species; thus, cell-free viruses are not produced. Though the majority of cases of OvHV-2 infection in goats appears to be subclinical, reports have associated OvHV-2 infection in goats with various clinical symptoms, including corneal opacity and pyrexia with neurological signs [ 30 31 ]. Further research is required to elucidate the effect of OvHV-2 on the health and productivity of goats and determine whether goats can act as a reservoir animal and be a source of OvHV-2 infection in susceptible animals.…”

“…It is usually associated with presumed adverse cutaneous drug reactions. A single case was reported in a goat infected with ovine herpesvirus-2 2) . The purpose of this article is to report a second case of granulomatous mural folliculitis in a goat.…”
