Diagnostic Evidence of Staphylococcus Warneri as a Possible Cause of Bovine Abortion

Abstract: Abstract. Following a routine necropsy of a bovine fetus aborted at 5 months of gestation, placenta, fetal tissue samples, and stomach contents were subjected to a number of laboratory tests. Staphylococcus warneri was isolated in pure culture from the lung, liver, and stomach contents, whereas the placenta yielded S. warneri and a number of contaminants. Gross evaluation of agar plates showed predominant colonies to be morphologically consistent with those of S. warneri and the identity of the agent was furth… Show more

“…This pathogen was found as part of the skin flora on humans and animals and has been suggested as a cause of abortion in cattle and humans [27]. Furthermore, it has been also associated with urinary tract infection [28], meningitis [29], orthopedic infections [27], and endocarditis [30]. On the other hand, K. pneumonia, inhibited by ethanol extract of H. verticillaris in the present study, a pathogen, can cause inflammation and hemorrhagic in human lungs.…”

“…In the current study, S. warneri was found as the most sensitive pathogen to three tested plant extracts including H. verticillaris, I. tricantha and E. cyclocar pum. “…Over the past three decades, clinical reports have pointed out that S. warneri is an opportunistic etiological agent frequently isolated from the immunocompromised cases bearing bacteremia, sepsis with multiple abscesses, orthopedic infections, vertebral osteomyelitis, and ventricular shunt infections [3][4][5][6][7]. S. warneri has been also suggested to be a culprit of bovine abortion, indicating it is a zoonotic pathogen [8].…”

“…Staphylococcus warneri is a coagulase-negative pathogen capable of producing several virulent factors, such that factors with ability to adhere and invade human epithelial cells, to form bio lm via ica-independent mechanisms, and to destroy cells by extracellular toxins [20]. Moreover, Staphylococcus warneri has been shown to be involved in spontaneous abortion in cattle [21] and humans [22]. Whether BP was associated with spontaneous abortion is an interesting topic to investigate.…”
