Diagnostic Difficulties in Woman with Crohn’s Disease, Ascites, and Elevated Value of Serum CA125 Antigen

Abstract: Variety of symptoms and atypical clinical course of Crohn's disease (CD) often create the need for additional diagnostic procedures. In the described case of woman with CD, there was a suspicion of coexistence of ovarian cancer. This issue is particularly important in patients treated with immunosuppressants and biological agents. The discussion focused on the usefulness of CA125 (cancer antigen 125, mucin 16) serum level estimation in clinical practice and draws attention to the possible reasons for the incre… Show more

“…While we adjusted for these potential confounders in our study, the possibility of residual confounding remains. In contrast, the association we observed between higher CA125 and inflammatory bowel diseases among the postmenopausal women may be due to the inflammatory nature of these diseases as CA125 is known to increase in some inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract (37,43).…”

“…Inflammatory markers could offer a novel approach to the diagnosis of this condition. Elevated levels of cancer antigen 125 (CA125) are frequently found in epithelial ovarian cancer; however, increased concentrations of this marker can also be detected in endometrioma, uterine leiomyoma, several types of inflammatory disease, and MCT . Another cancer antigen (CA19‐9) has a glycolipid structure and was initially found to be elevated in gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas, particularly those of the pancreas .…”
