To ensure safe and effective practice, dental practitioners must stay up-to-date with all scientific updates involving their profession. In this regard, many outdated myths and misconceptions may be persistently believed and practiced. This study aimed to examine dental misconceptions circulating among dentists in Saudi Arabia. MethodsAn electronic survey was administered to Saudi Arabian dental practitioners classified and registered with the Saudi Commission of Health Specialties. It collected their demographics, career and experience details, and responses to 16 questions that targeted different myths. Logistic regression was used to analyze factors associated with their knowledge. ResultsA total of 519 dentists answered the survey, of which 54% were male with a mean age of 32 ± 9 years and a mean practice of 7 ± 8 years. More than half (57%) practiced general dentistry. In most (69%) of the questions, 40% of the respondents answered incorrectly. The proportion of incorrect answers to some questions reached 62%. Years of teaching, years in practice, and doctor rank had no association with the knowledge score. Conversely, the type of practice and specialty had multiple statistically significant associations (p < 0.05). ConclusionThis study shows that many myths, despite being debunked for more than 20 years, are still circulating among Saudi Arabian dentists, including many young dentists. Academic institutions must urgently address these concepts and the science that disproves them; dentists must implement up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge in their practice.

Background The anxiety among pregnant women about the imaging of teeth during pregnancy may have an adverse effect on the oral health of both the mother and the fetus too. This research study was conducted to evaluate women’s knowledge of the utilization of dental imaging during pregnancy. Methods In this research, structured questionnaires were distributed electronically through social media. The questionnaires contained questions focused on the women’s (studying or working in medical fields) awareness regarding the ionizing radiation protection that takes place during dental imaging, the safest period for dental imaging, the sort of radiographs that can be required, and the chance of radiation-induced malignant tumor and malformation of the fetal as a result of dental imaging. Results Overall, 984 participants completed questionnaires that were analyzed after being received. Most of the participants (n = 637; 64.7%) were < 30 years of age. The greater number of the participants (66.8%) had fair knowledge of dental imaging. 25.4% mentioned that pregnant women are able to do dental imaging during the first trimester. And approximately half of the participants thought that cone-beam computed tomography and panoramic images must not be carried out during pregnancy. Moreover, nearly the same percentage of them also believed that the risk of inborn malformation is high due to dental imaging. Conclusions The results refer to a low awareness among people who have medical knowledge regarding dental radiograph protection during pregnancy. This needs to be paid attention to among students, graduates, and workers in medical fields by focusing on the courses and lectures related to dental imaging protection during pregnancy.

Knowledge About Chronic Orofacial Pain Among General Dentists of Kermanshah, Iran

Background and Objective:Diagnosis and treatment of chronic orofacial pain are one of the most challenging issues in dentistry. The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge of general dentists regarding orofacial pain in Kermanshah, Iran.Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016 including general dentists of Kermanshah city. A researcher-designed questionnaire was administered to collect demographic data as well as measuring knowledge of the dentists in four sections including etiology, clinical presentations, physical examination, and treatment of chronic orofacial pain. The questionnaire had acceptable validity (content validity > 0.9) and reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient= 0.857 for test re-test; Cronbach’s alpha= 0.72 for internal consistency). The data were analyzed by the SPSS software (ver. 18.0) using Spearman’s correlation coefficient (P < 0.05).Results:There were 121 male (72.9%) and 45 female (27.1%) dentists with mean (SD) age of 40.55 (8.03) years and mean (SD) practice history of 13.28 (8.43) years. Mean (SD) knowledge score was 10.54 (2.36) (maximum possible score= 15). 48.2% of dentists had good knowledge in overall. 48.2% about etiology, 45.2% about clinical presentations, 36.1% about physical examination, and 7.8% about treatment had good knowledge. Knowledge had direct and significant relationship with age (r = 0.179; P = 0.022) and practice history (r = 0.18; P = 0.021).Conclusion:The results showed that the studied dentists did not have enough knowledge about chronic orofacial pain especially in the treatment field. Therefore, it is recommended to implement educational programs to improve their knowledge.
