The aim of this study was to characterise the air based on atmospheric particles in the city of Niamey. To do this, a mass concentration detector type PCE-RCM 11 and station type Davis Pro were used as collection equipment. Particulate matter with diameters of less than 2.5 μm and 10 μm, PM2.5 and PM10, respectively, as well as meteorological parameters, temperature and humidity were determined. The study was carried out over 15 days in 5 districts of Niamey between 7.30 am and 10.10 pm at the main roundabouts in each district. According to the results obtained, the average concentrations of PM2.5 in the air measured ranged from 75.34 μg/m3 to 162.34 μg/m3, whereas the WHO recommends 15 μg/m3 for PM2.5 for daily exposure, which would cause cardiovascular or pulmonary disease in those exposed. The PM10 values recorded ranged from 100.43 μg/m3 to 221.90 μg/m3, well in excess of the WHO standards published in 2021, which recommend 45 μg/m3 for PM10, indicating a probable risk of throat and respiratory disorders. Average temperature values ranged from 23.051 °C ± 0.1 °C to 34.186 °C ± 0.1 °C. The average relative humidity measured ranged from 17.164% ± 1% to 26.910% ± 1%. The results of the correlation analysis showed a strong correlation between PM2.5 and PM10. The latter has a strong positive correlation with temperature. PM2.5 is strongly negatively correlated with relative humidity, while PM10 is moderately negatively correlated with relative humidity. Temperature and humidity show a weak negative correlation with each other. Each of the particles studied is present in the communes of Niamey at the 5 roundabouts representing the study area. It should be confirmed that these particles emitted into the air could have come from urban transport. The correlation circle obtained from the PCA explains the relationship between the variables measured (PM and meteorological parameters). The first two dimensions explain 97.55% of the total information, with 81.62% for dimension 1% and 15.93% for dimension 2.

Purpose The goal of this work is to analyse the environmental impacts across the productive continuum of market gardening in southern Benin, to determine whether significant differences exist amongst the types of production, and to highlight their hotpots suitable to improvement. Moreover, the relative nutritional quality of products from different production system types were compared to determine whether there were differences and to assess them in relation to the associated environmental impacts. Methods LCA and laboratory analyses were performed on a representative sample of systems and products (carrot, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, watermelon). The resulting scores (single scores for LCA and Nutrient Rich Food scores for nutritional quality) were statistically treated to identify the representativeness of their differences across production sites and production types (featuring distinctive production strategies: Conventional — synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, Organic — organic fertilisers and pesticides and “Lean” — limited inputs). Results and discussion Statistically significant differences across environmental scores were found amongst production sites (for carrot, lettuce and all crops) and types (for carrot and all crops). For tomato, produced on all sites, under all production types, the natural and management-driven variability is large enough that no significant differences were found. Impacts are dominated by direct emissions from (over-)fertilisation and by fuel consumption for water pumping. Despite the absence of significant differences amongst production system types regarding the contents of both β-carotene and polyphenols, the nutritional indices suggest at least marginal differences across types regarding the overall nutritional value of carrot and tomato across types. Based on the limited data available, it cannot be stated that such differences are statistically significant. For carrot, there seems to be a correlation between nutritional quality and environmental impacts, with higher nutritional scores associated with lower environmental impacts. For tomato, it does not seem to exist a correlation. Conclusions Significant differences in environmental scores exist amongst the types of production, with the larger impact associated with organic production, whilst that no statistically significant differences on nutritional quality can be demonstrated across types. Overall improvement of these systems would be achieved by less energy-intensive irrigation, organic waste processing platforms to reduce volatilisation losses, knowledge on the fertilising value of organic waste, and agricultural extension services or technical guides on good agricultural practices to reduce over-fertilisation and other negative environmental impacts.

Zinc Speciation in Organic Waste Drives Its Fate in Amended Soils

Recycling of organic waste (OW) as fertilizer on farmland is a widespread practice that fosters sustainable development via resource reuse. However, the advantages of OW fertilization should be weighed against the potentially negative environmental impacts due to the presence of contaminants such as zinc (Zn). Current knowledge on the parameters controlling the environmental fate of Zn following OW application on cultivated soils is scant. We addressed this shortcoming by combining soil column experiments and Zn speciation characterization in OWs and amended soils. Soil column experiments were first carried out using two contrasted soils (sandy soil and sandy clay loam) that were amended with sewage sludge or poultry manure and cropped with lettuce. The soil columns were irrigated with identical amounts of water twice a week, and the leachates collected at the column outlet were monitored and analyzed. This scheme (OW application and lettuce crop cycle) was repeated for each treatment. Lettuce yields and Zn uptake were assessed at the end of each cycle. The soil columns were dismantled and seven soil layers were sampled and analyzed at the end of the second cycle (total experiment time: 12 weeks). X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses were then conducted to assess Zn speciation in OW and OW-amended soils. The results of this study highlighted that (i) the fate of Zn in water–soil–plant compartments was similar, regardless of the type of soil and OW, (ii) >97.6% of the Zn input from OW accumulated in the soil surface layer, (iii) Zn uptake by lettuce increased with repeated OW applications, and (iv) no radical change in Zn speciation was observed at the end of the 12-week experiment, and phosphate was found to drive Zn speciation in both OW and amended soils (i.e., amorphous Zn-phosphate and Zn sorbed on hydoxylapatite). These results suggest that Zn speciation in OW is a key determinant controlling the environmental fate of this element in OW-amended soils.
