Diagnostic and therapeutic research on ultrasound microbubble/nanobubble contrast agents (Review)

Abstract: The contrast enhanced imaging function of ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) has been extensively investigated using physical acoustic signatures. It has a number of novel applications, including tissue‑specific molecular imaging and multi‑modal imaging. In addition there are numerous other therapeutic applications of UCAs, for example as vehicles for drug or gene delivery. These uses are discussed, as well as the acoustically‑induced biological effects, including ultrasound targeted microbubble destruction (UT… Show more

“…More and more therapeutic applications of microbubbles are emerging at present [ 9 , 12 14 ]. This novel ultrasound, known as microbubble-mediated ultrasound (MUS), has the ability to produce greater microstream and microjet than LIPUS [ 15 , 16 ]. To our knowledge, whether MUS has more effect on the repair progress in steroid-associated osteonecrosis is unknown.…”

“…These are generally coated with albumin or lipoproteins for stability in blood 11 . While the majority of microbubble work has focused on contrast agents, studies evaluating delivery of therapeutics or combining therapeutics with contrast is growing rapidly 12 .…”

“…An interesting application of nanotechnology for the PDT-guided treatment of PC involves the use of microbubbles. Microbubbles (MBs) are gas-filled structures stabilized by an external lipid layer, that are used as contrast agents for ultrasound (US) mediated clinical diagnosis (Ma et al, 2015; Dimcevski et al, 2016). In addition, they might represent promising platforms for cancer treatment by virtue of their responsiveness to US irradiation which is called Ultrasound Targeted Microbubble Destruction (UTMD), that enables the drug release through the cavitation effect (Lentacker et al, 2014).…”
