Diagnostic and prognostic value of preoperative systemic inflammatory markers in anaplastic thyroid cancer

Abstract: Background Easily accessible, generalized, and inexpensive methods are expected to differentiate anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) from advanced differentiated thyroid cancer (aDTC). We aimed to explore potential diagnostic and prognostic value of systematic inflammatory markers (SIMs) in ATC and aDTC. Methods About 22 ATC, 101 aDTC, and 100 matched early DTC patients were analyzed retrospectively. SIMs included the comprehensive index, neutrophil‐monocyte‐platelet‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NMPLR) and the previous… Show more

“…In thyroid cancer, NLR and PLR have diagnostic and predictive significance for advanced differentiated thyroid cancer and ATC, while the diagnostic and predictive significance of NMPLR is far superior to that of NLR or PLR. 32 Similarly, in our study, NLR and PLR were significant for the diagnosis and prediction of PTC cases and healthy individuals, and the combination of NLR+PLR was also meaningful, which achieved far superior diagnostic effect than the individual one. Moreover, IL-27 rs17855750 and rs153109 have been proved to be associated with PTC occurrence, which is partially consistent with our results.…”

There is still controversy as to whether systemic inflammatory markers can differentiate between thyroid cancer and benign thyroid nodules.…”

“…Twenty-year recurrence rate was only 6% in PTMC [ 26 ]. Although the prognostic value of systemic inflammatory markers for advanced thyroid cancer has been reported in some studies [ 6 , 27 ], it is difficult to conduct large-scale studies with relevant clinical implications due to the low incidence of advanced thyroid cancers. It might be more practical to study the association between systemic inflammatory markers and clinicopathological prognosticators of thyroid cancer, rather than the disease-specific events themselves such as death or recurrence.…”

“…Despite significant advances in clinical treatment of THCA in recent years, it remains lacking of the effective treatment options available to THCA patients (15)(16)(17). The difficulties in the treatment of patients with THCA stem from our limited understanding of molecular mechanism of tumor occurrence, and this provides a new research direction recently (18)(19)(20)(21).…”
