Diagnostic and prognostic significance of CA IX and suPAR in gastric cancer

Abstract: This study was intended to evaluate the prognostic and diagnostic significance of carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX) and soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) levels in gastric cancer patients. CA IX and suPAR were analyzed from serum and plasma samples of gastric cancer patients. Fifty patients and 34 controls were enrolled. CA IX and suPAR levels were statistically significantly higher in the patient group (patient; 182.5 ± 212.4, control; 47.3 ± 32, P = 0.0001 and patient; 5.74 ± 5.3, control;… Show more

“…In vitro studies have shown that suPAR is associated with cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation [19,20]. Elevated suPAR levels have been determined in solid cancers such as ovarian [21], endometrial, cervical [22], breast [23], stomach [24], colon [25], and non-small cell lung cancer [26]. Positive associations between serum suPAR levels and soluble serum CD138, creatinine, β2 microglobulin, stage of disease, and extramedullary bone marrow involvement have been reported in patients with multiple myeloma [27].…”

“…Notably, eosinophilia in the asthmatic lung is not sufficient to induce eosinophil CAR4 expression because overexpression of IL-13 does not upregulate CAR4 in the absence of pathogenic level of IL-5. Recent research suggests that orally administrated CAR1 positively regulates regulatory T cells and negatively regulates T H 17 cells with a negative impact on inflammatory bowel disease pathogenesis (31), CAR2 and CAR4 are associated with pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis (32) and infectious diarrhea (13), and CAR9 may be associated with gastrointestinal malignancies (33), suggesting a link between CARs and immune regulation.…”

“…In addition, a soluble version of CAIX has been detected in body fluids, including serum and urine 17 . High levels of circulating CAIX have been found in cancer patients, by us 18 and others, although its clinical significance remains unclear 19,20 . The pivotal role of CAIX as a pH regulating enzyme in tumors under hypoxia together with its tissue-specific expression have evoked interest in CAIX as a potential target for cancer therapy.…”
