Diagnostic accuracy of VIKIA® Rota-Adeno and Premier™ Rotaclone® tests for the detection of rotavirus in Niger

Abstract: ObjectiveWe conducted a parallel evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of VIKIA® Rota-Adeno, a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and Premier™ Rotaclone® an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) as the reference standard. The study was part of a rotavirus surveillance project in Niger.ResultsThe sensitivity of both tests was 80.7%. After exclusion of one indeterminate result by visual reading, the specificity of the Premier™ Rotaclone® was 100% by visual or optical de… Show more

“…An enzyme immunoassay was used for 10 of the 14 study years, whilst immuno-chromatography was utilised between 2005 and 2008. The immuno-chromatographic method used (VIKIA®, Rota-Adeno) has a slightly lower diagnostic accuracy compared to enzyme immunoassay methods [ 52 , 53 ]. However, the pre-vaccine introduction time series spanned 11 years, and since the change in testing practices was not accompanied by a clear non-secular variation in RVGE hospitalisation rates, we would not expect this change to have impacted significantly on effect estimates.…”

“…VIKIA ® Rota-Adeno (BioMérieux, France) was stated to have high sensitivity (77 -98.8%) and specificity (89 -100.0%) [8][9][10][11][12][13]. The specificity of this study is similar at 91.6%, but for the sensitivity, the result was below those standards at 44.8%.…”

“…The sensitivity and specificity of norovirus RDTs are 24 -100% and 62 -100%. Rotavirus RDT are stated to range from 69 -94% and 84 -100%, in sensitivity and specificity, respectively [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. In Thailand, the sensitivity and specificity of norovirus RDT range from 74.2 -83.3% and 87.5 -99.5% respectively.…”
