Diagnostic accuracy of three screening questions (3Q/TMD) in relation to the DC/TMD in a specialized orofacial pain clinic

Abstract: In a specialized pain clinic, the two pain questions (Q1, Q2) are positive in most patients with pain-related TMD. Therefore, in case of a positive response, further diagnostic procedures for TMD pain are warranted. For the functional screening question (Q3), a positive response is indicative for an intra-articular DC/TMD diagnosis, while in case of a negative outcome, an intra-articular TMD might still be present.

“…In a subsample of the current study population, affirmative answers to any of the 2 questions were primarily associated with a TMD pain diagnosis with a sensitivity of 0.82 and specificity of 0.87, 26 whereas among patients referred to a specialist clinic due to pain complaints, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.96 and 0.33, respectively. 28 Given that the subjective nature of pain justifies self-reported assessment, these screening questions could be a suitable measure for orofacial pain complaint, often related to the most common chronic orofacial pain condition, TMD. 24 …”

“…This result is comparable to the results of the study where patients received 33% TMJ disorders reference DC/TMD diagnosis. 10 Myalgia was the most common muscle pain disorder accompanying disc displacement with reduction. Myofascial pain with referral was the most prevalent muscle pain disorder in patients with DDw/oRwLO.…”

“… Concerns specific to the Coronavirus: These included worries about the risk of being contaminated (yes/no), and about the financial aspects, physical health, mental health, and relationship with relatives and friends (ranging from 1—not at all to 5—very worried). TMD screening: The 3Q/TMD questionnaire, which is a reliable and acceptable tool for screening the TMD conditions, was used for collecting data [ 24 , 25 ]. The questionnaire has an excellent negative predictive value and is regarded as a valid tool for screening [ 24 , 25 ].…”

The questionnaire has an excellent negative predictive value and is regarded as a valid tool for screening [ 24 , 25 ].
