Diagnostic Accuracy of Magnetic Resonance Imaging versus Clinical Staging in Cervical Cancer

Abstract: Background: Cervical cancer is the third most common gynecological cancer and a widespread malignancy in women, accounting for a large proportion of the cancer burden in developing countries. We compared accuracy of MRI staging with clinical staging and also concordance between the two methods for newly diagnosed patients with cervical cancer, using clinical staging as the reference. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was conducted on 27 newly diagnosed patients with cervical cancer from Imam Khomei… Show more

“…The current study detected extension of the mass in cervix into corpus of uterus in 51.4% patients, into rectal musculature or mucosa in 5.7% patients and into mucosa or muscle of urinary bladder in 8.6% patients. The accuracy, specificity and NPV is almost agreeing with the studies of Shweel et al and Shirazi et al 12 Parametrial extension in a case of carcinoma cervix can be excluded if the hypointense stromal signal intensity is preserved on T2WI. Parametrial involvement is said to be present when there is a spiculated margin replacing the hypointense signal on T2WI.…”

“…In studies by Hricak et al and Mitchell et al, in locally advanced cervical cancers, imaging modalities were superior for staging purposes (Hricak et al, 2005;Mitchell et al, 2006;Shirazi et al, 2014). In contrast, clinical staging was found to be more effective in a study by Hancke et al (Hancke et al, 2008).…”

“… 1 The treatment of cervical cancer involves surgery and chemoradiotherapy, which depends on early detection and accurate staging, especially the lymph node involvement. 2 4 Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is not only closely related to cervical cancer recurrence and distant metastasis, but also an independent factor in poor survival. Furthermore, lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) not only was an independent influencing factor for LNM but also has been well considered for treatment cervical cancer now.…”
