Diagnostic accuracy of fine‐needle aspiration cytology in Warthin tumors

Abstract: The diagnostic accuracy of FNAC for the diagnosis of Warthin tumor is high and the percentage of missed malignant tumors is very low. Our results imply that a cytologic diagnosis of Warthin tumor may justify conservative treatment.

“…On the other hand, Patient 2 lacked a lymphoid stroma in the FNAC specimen and showed papillary shaped groups of tumor cells with enlarged nuclei. Although high diagnostic accuracy is commonly reported for WT by FNAC (Veder et al 2010), our observations indicate that FNAC alone may not yield a definitive diagnosis of WT and other salivary gland tumors. Imaging diagnosis without dynamic MRIs showed no effective findings for either of the patients described here.…”

“…Histologi cally, WT characteristically consists of cystic and solid areas. The cystic area is lined by layers of tall columnar on cocytic luminal cells and flattened or cuboidal basal cells, while the stroma consists of lymphocytes [10][11][12] .The cytological diagnosis of cystic salivary gland lesions is rather difficult due to the wide range of lesions that enter the differential diagnosis which include chronic sialadenitis, WT, acinic cell carcinoma, pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma [4,21] .…”

“…In our study, two cases were available for histopathological correlation with 100% concordance. [13] Myoepithelioma (myoepithelial adenoma) may be plasmacytoid, epitheloid or spindle cell type. The cellular pleomorphic adenoma may not be distinguisable from myoepithelioma where selective sampling of solid focus of plasmacytoid cells without specific stroma has been done. In our study, four cases were given differential diagnosis of Pleomorphic Adenoma/Myoepithelioma turned out to be Pleomorphic Adenoma in histology.…”
