Diagnosis of endoscopic Barrett’s esophagus by transnasal flexible spectral imaging color enhancement

Abstract: The transnasal FICE system enables clear visualization of palisade vessels and provides better contrasting images of the demarcation between the BE mucosa and the gastric mucosa, and thus contributes to easier diagnosis of endoscopic BE.

“…Based on the various lesions, different spectral images will be selected (29), which can achieve the purpose of electronic virtual chromoendoscopy. Some researchers have used FICE to diagnose gastrointestinal lesions and received satisfactory results in the world (30)(31)(32). In this study, the best wavelength combinations that we selected were as follows: R=540 nm, G=490 nm, B=420 nm and R=550 nm, G=500 nm, B=470 nm, which could clearly show the lesions.…”

“…However recent advances with this procedure have been made, and a new endoscope (model EG-580NW, Fuji Film, Co.) were manufactured beginning in October 2011. This endoscope is a trans-nasal model that provides high-quality endoscopic images with a wide field view of (140°) and is equipped with the flexible spectreal imaging color enhancement (FICE) system, which is based on a spectral estimation technique by which the narrow bandwidth is obtained from white light images without optical filters [13][14]. Unfortunately, the FICE system cannot image distinctive microvessels on the tumor surface as sharply as NBI.…”

“…The outer diameter of the endoscope is 5.9 mm. This endoscope is a trans-nasal model that provides high-quality endoscopic images with a wide field view (of 140°), and is equipped with the flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE) system, which enhances images by extracting spectral images at the desired wavelengths via the application of signal processing to the white light generally used by endoscopes [13][14]. However, given the limited ability of conventional white light illumination to achieve high-cotrast imaging of microvessels in the mucosal surface layer, a more effective system was needed.…”

“…In this study, we used CIELAB for evaluation of a color. The CIELAB is the most complete color space specified by the International Commission on Illumination, and is designed to approximate human vision and used for the comparative analysis of color in various fields [10,11,12,13,14]…”
