Diagnosis of colon cancer by attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy and soft independent modeling of class analogy

Abstract: This study tries to demonstrate that attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) microspectroscopy in combination with chemometric methods can reliably distinguish malignant colon tissues from healthy ones. It is important to explore a noninvasive and rapid method for detection of colon cancer biopsies. Initially, principal component analysis was applied to examine the degree of separation between tissue samples. Soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) was also employed to eva… Show more

“…In particular, SIMCA is a widely used supervised pattern recognition method to classify sample spectra within speci c categories. It consists of a collection of PCA models and can provide independent classi cation for each category, as detailed in [29,30]. Speci cally, PCA calculations were carried out in order to reduce the dimensionality of the data set, allowing an overview of the samples.…”

“…1,2,4,[38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46] More recently, many infrared spectroscopic studies have been carried out to investigate the C. coccodes soil-borne fungus and classify the samples at the isolate level. [47][48][49] In our previous study, we examined the potential of FTIR-ATR spectroscopy as a tool for assigning 14 C. coccodes isolates into five VCGs. The FTIR-ATR sampling technique is based on evanescent wave absorption.…”

“…The five-year survival rate for CRC is less than 60% in Europe [4]. In addition, more than 90% of CRC s have metastasized or advanced by the time they are diagnosed [5]. Furthermore, the treatments for CRC are always accompanied by side effects including fecal incontinence, sexual dysfunction and bowel dysfunction [6].…”
