Diagnosis, Management and Prognosis of Vaginal Erosion After Transobturator Suburethral Tape Procedure Using a Nonwoven Thermally Bonded Polypropylene Mesh

Abstract: A 13.8% rate of vaginal mesh erosion using a nonwoven thermally bonded polypropylene mesh was reported. This complication was probably due to the characteristics of the mesh and not to the transobturator approach. Complete removal of the tape is recommended and the continence status prognosis is good (78%).

“…The rate of vaginal extrusion of the ObTape TM in our series is consistent with the rate of vaginal extrusion reported by other large series [Spinosa and Dubuis, 2005], and lower than reported with smaller series [Domingo et al, 2005;Siegel, 2005]. Spinosa reported three cases (2.5%) of vaginal tape extrusion in a series of 117 patients.…”

“…Several small studies in the literature report the associated morbidity of the ObTape TM and short term follow-up of the TOT technique in the successful treatment of stress incontinence [DeTayrac et al, 2004;Domingo et al, 2005;Spinosa and Dubuis, 2005]. In this study we report SJ is a paid speaker, and CGB has been paid as a speaker, both for Mentor Corporation.…”

“…With other complications such as voiding difficulty and overactive bladder symptoms the evidence is less clear. A number of microporous or multifilament slings have been removed from the market, mainly for an unaccepted rate of sling-related infections-these include the Protegen Sling® (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA, USA) [4], Uratape®/Obtape® (Mentor, Santa Barbara, CA, USA) [5], Intravaginal Slingplasty® (Tyco, Mansfield, MA, USA) [6] and the InFast® sling with InteMesh® (American Medical Systems, Minnetonka, MN, USA) [7]. However, many slings have already been implanted and will continue to cause infection-related complications into the future with serious consequences for many women.…”
