Diagnosis and Treatment Modalities for Osteomyelitis

Abstract: Osteomyelitis is an infection-related inflammatory disease of the bones. Imaging and laboratory results are typically used to support a clinical diagnosis of osteomyelitis. Microbial cultures and bone biopsies provide conclusive diagnoses. The first imaging procedure that needs to be done is radiography, but its sensitivity is low in the early stages of the disease. The sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging, both with and without contrast material, is higher for detecting areas of bone necrosis in advanced… Show more

“…Previous research has established RA as a common risk factor for both T2DM and OM 7,9,10 . Our study further investigated their associations with T2DM and OM risk, revealing the extent to which T2DM mediates RA’s causal effect on OM.…”

“…48 The nonspecific clinical manifestations and radiological examinations, along with the invasive nature of the current “gold standard” diagnostic methods, contribute to the absence of recognized biomarkers for predicting S. aureus -infected osteomyelitis. 10 Cuproptosis primarily relies on mitochondrial stress to regulate cell death, with a focus on lipidation of mitochondrial enzymes and loss of Fe-S cluster proteins. 32 , 49 As a novel type of cell death, cuproptosis has been implicated in the development of various diseases.…”

“…During these initial phases, X-ray imaging is often not sensitive enough to detect osteomyelitis. 10 Similarly, common inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate lack specificity for osteomyelitis. 11 , 12 Although Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides better staging and aids in surgical planning, it mainly achieves higher sensitivity in the later stages of the disease.…”

“…One of the most important diagnostic studies to make a definitive diagnosis and choose the right treatment tactics is the histomorphologic study, which requires a biopsy. [1] The biopsy of the bone tissue, which hides the bone marrow, is very difficult because it is very hard and dense. This is also an important problem in the treatment of AHO, in which osteoperforations must be performed to release the purulent contents within the bone tissue.…”
