“…The current diagnostic criteria set a strict limit on AIH cases showing chronic active hepatitis with distinctive hepatitic activity. The classical AIH criteria of the Intractable Hepatobiliary Disease Study Group in Japan (2013) include the following: (i) exclusion of other causes of liver disease; (ii) positivity for anti‐nuclear antibody (ANA) and/or anti‐smooth muscle antibody; (iii) increased immunoglobulin G (IgG) level (>1.10 times the upper normal limit); (iv) interface hepatitis and plasma cell infiltration in liver tissues; and (v) marked efficacy of steroid therapy. Typical AIH is defined by the presence of (i) and any three items among (ii)–(v), whereas atypical AIH is defined by (i) and any one or two items among (ii)–(v).…”
