Diagnosis and surgical treatment of carotid body tumor: A retrospective analysis of 58 patients

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of the present study was to illustrate the diagnosis and treatment of carotid body tumor (CBT) based on our experience of previous patients. A total of 58 patients (62 lesions) with CBT who received surgery between October 2003 and October 2013 were included. In total, 17 lesions were categorized into Shamblin grade I, 33 were grade II, and 12 were grade III. Surgical resection of CBT was performed for 52 lesions, resection of CBT and the external carotid artery was performed for 9 lesions, a… Show more

“…Currently DOTA coupled peptides PET/CT is required for further evaluation and the diagnosis is inferred based on the extent of somatostatin receptor uptake 2 . Preoperative biopsy is technically challenging because of risk of adrenergic crisis and excessive bleeding in HNPGL 3 …”

“…Splaying of the internal and external carotid arteries and causing a lyre-like appearance is a feature indicating CBT. Besides the invasive nature, ectopic embolism, vascular ruptures and a high prevalence of cardiac arrest during angiographic assessment of CBTs were previously reported (15,16). Before MRI and CT can be performed, thorough protocols need to be evaluated respecting potential comorbidities of the patients like renal impairment, thyroid gland disbalances, allergic reactions to contrast media in order to safeguard appropriate scans.…”

“…Furthermore, a functioning paraganglioma requires preprocedural treatment with an a-blocker to avoid hypertensive crisis. 3,4 Occasionally schwannomas can mimic paragangliomas on conventional cross-sectional imaging. [3][4][5] Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard technique to differentiate between the two entities; however, the procedure itself carries a 1-2% increased risk of stroke.…”

[3][4][5] Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard technique to differentiate between the two entities; however, the procedure itself carries a 1-2% increased risk of stroke. 6 We aim to explore the potential role of the enhancement pattern on neck computed tomography angiography (CTA) in differentiating paragangliomas from schwannomas.…”
