Diagnosis and Prognosis of Iatrogenic Injury of the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve

Abstract: In contrast to previous reports, our results show that laryngeal electromyography is a reliable tool for diagnosing the type of injury within the injured RLN, making it possible to predict the functional outcome in these patients. On the basis of the results, a future randomized study on nimodipine treatment for RLN axonal injury is suggested.

“…They reported a 90.9% probability that a person will not recovery motion if they demonstrate evidence of “high grade injury” on EMG, but that EMG was an indifferent predictor of recovery (55.6%). 22 It was therefore argued that patients demonstrating presence of spontaneous activity 5559 or absence or reduced motor unit potentials 56,57,6062 at 6 months may be good candidates for early intervention. 22 …”

“…This diagnosis method has been recognized since 1944 by Weddel and there is an important research regarding its application. Even if it has been performed since the 1950s 2 , its practical clinical importance has been emphasized only since the last three decades of the twentieth century 2,3 . The variations of the technique implemented over time, the variability patterns of the study, the different…”

“…In addition to this activity in the central nervous system, they have been shown promise in multiple rodent models as a possible pharmacologic treatment for facial nerve injury [6][7][8][9][10]. To the best knowledge of the authors, the literature is poor regarding the beneficial local effects of gallopamil (a calcium channel blocker) on transected sciatic nerve.…”
