Diagnosis and Management of Neuropathic Pain

Abstract: A recent revision in the definition of neuropathic pain has highlighted this condition as a distinct disease entity. More accurate search for a lesion in the somatosensory nervous system as the pain-generating mechanism will help target the treatment by pharmacological agents. A multidisciplinary approach is recommended, with pharmacotherapy supplemented by psychological therapy and physical rehabilitation, and appropriate interventional treatment for selected refractory cases.

“…O pioids are commonly prescribed for postoperative pain 77 or severe neuropathic pain. 75 However, many patients continue to consume opioids well after surgery 21 due to continued pain 18 or postsurgical opioid over-prescription. 5,40 Analgesic tolerance developing after repeated opioid consumption 7 further increases the risk of developing opioid dependence, withdrawal and/or overdose.…”
