Diagnosing Psychopathy through Emotional Regulation Tasks: Heart Rate Variability versus Implicit Association Test

Abstract: Background: Nowadays, the assessment of psychopathy relies on semistructured interviews plus file reviews. In order to improve the predictive validity of psychopathy at the individual level, tools that are not based on the rating of signs and symptoms are in great need. Sampling and Methods: The present study was conducted in a representative sample of 204 Spanish sentenced inmates. These inmates have served at least 6 months of their sentence at the Pereiro de Aguiar (Ourense, Spain) penitentiary. Psychopathy… Show more

“…As there is a great need for non-symptom-based methods to detect psychopathy to optimize predictive validity, using symptoms or criminal behavior to diagnose psychopathy is not conducive for preventing antisocial behavior 27 . After first transgressions, individuals are at a higher risk of committing subsequent offences 28 , which further highlights the value of early detection.…”

“…They found support for a general psychopathy factor they opined validated the CAPP as a concept map, but also interpreted three residual group factors as resembling the triarchic model of psychopathy. Other studies have revealed evidence that the CAPP model overlaps with the Hare Psychopathy Checklist–Revised (PCL-R; Hare, 2003) and Screening Version (Flórez et al, 2017; Hart et al, 1995; Pedersen et al, 2010; Sandvik et al, 2012), and that the CAPP equaled the latter in the prediction of violence and general reoffending (Pedersen et al, 2010), and related more strongly than the PCL-R to heart rate variability parameters (Flórez et al, 2017).…”

“…Table 1. As previously reported in [37,38,40], Table 1 indicates IPDE scores and sociodemographic and forensic variables of the sample. Significance levels of these variables in relation to a PCL-R cut-off score of 25 and a proportional CAPP cut-off score of 124 are also shown.…”

“…The protocol followed in the current study has been described in detail elsewhere [37,38]. Participants in the current study are the same as in our previously published PCL-R and CAPP work [37,38,40].…”
