The vehicle emissions tests, which are performed using the Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS), indicate that the diesel cars produce several times more NOx emissions on the road than during certification realised according to the methodology New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). This fact initiated the infamous "dieselgate" affair. It is a wellknown reality that the current emission limits are very strict and therefore a serious problem arises for the motor car producers to meet the demanding emission requirements. The main task of the presented research work was testing of 10 passenger cars with regard to true values of their exhaust gas emissions. These cars were equipped with the diesel engines and gasoline engines that officially meet the Euro 4-6 standards. Based on the measured results it was found that the real NOx emissions of the diesel engines significantly exceed the values measured by NEDC. The results obtained using the NEDC cycle also contradict the findings from two alternative driving cycles: CADC (Common Artemis Driving Cycle; Artemis -Assessment and Reliability of Transport Emission Models and Inventory Systems) and WLTC (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Cycle).

At our workplace, we deal with research in the broad field of machine parts and mechanisms. It is very appropriate and needful to utilize the knowledge gained from our extensive research also in an educational process. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present one of our educational activities, based on the research in the field of continuous tuning of mechanical systems in terms of torsional vibration magnitude using pneumatic flexible shaft couplings -pneumatic torsional vibration tuners. The main task of the activity -laboratory measurement, prepared for students in the subject "Design of machines and machine elements" is to determine experimentally an optimum air pressure value in a pneumatic coupling, which is mounted in an experimental mechanical system of piston compressor drive for a given operating mode of the system. So the students can apply gained knowledge from multiple subjects, especially from subjects "Dynamics" and "Machine parts" in practice and also gain the practical experience.

Presently, mechanical system vibroisolation is becoming increasingly important. One of the new approaches is semi-active vibroisolation using elements capable of changing a selected mechanical property. These include, among others, pneumatic flexible shaft couplings capable of changing torsional stiffness during operation. The main goal of the article is to examine the potential advantages of a newly patented pneumatic coupling over a current type with the same pneumatic element arrangement. For comparison, parameters determinable from static load characteristics were selected. These parameters are maximum twist angle and torque, average torsional stiffness, and the percentage of torque transmitted by the bellows rubber shell. In all cases, the new coupling had better properties. Since the prototype of the new coupling has not yet been produced, its parameters were determined from its mathematical-physical model. The article contains a full procedure to obtain the static load characteristic of a new coupling type, beginning with the determination of air bellows force/height and volume/height characteristics, then optimum sizes of coupling with regards to the operating range of elements, the dependency of element height on the coupling’s twist angle, and finally the computation of the static load characteristic considering isothermal gas compression. The presented procedure can be applied to any pneumatic bellows where the force/height characteristics of different pressures are given.
