The study of pore characteristics is of great importance in reservoir evaluation, especially in deeply buried sandstone. It controls the storage mechanism and reservoir fluid properties of the permeable horizons. The first member of Eocene Shahejie Formation (Es1) sandstone is classified as feldspathic litharenite and lithic arkose. The present research investigates the pore characteristics and reservoir features of the deeply buried sandstone reservoir of Es1 member of Shahejie Formation. The techniques including thin-section petrography, mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP), scanning electron microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscope images were used to demarcate the pores including primary intergranular pores and secondary intergranular, intragranular, dissolution and fracture pores. Mercury injection test and routine core analysis were led to demarcate the pore network characteristics of the studied reservoir. Pore size and pore throat size distribution are acquired from mercury injection test. Porosity values range from 0.5% to 30%, and permeability ranges 0.006-7000 mD. Pore radii of coarse-grained sandstone and fine-grained sandstone range from 0.2 to > 4 µm and 1 nm to 1.60 µm, respectively, by MICP analysis. The mineral composition also plays an important role in protecting the pores with pressure from failure. Fractured sandstone and coarse-grained sandstone consist of large and interconnected pores that enhance the reservoir porosity and permeability, whereas fine-grained sandstone and siltstone consist of numerous pores but not well interconnected, and so they consist of high porosity with low permeability.

The Shahejie Formation is a fundamental rock unit for hydrocarbon exploration and production in the Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin. Methodology including thin sectioning, core observations, fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence, fluid inclusion, laser scanning confocal microscopy and geochemical analysis (C, O isotopes) were all utilized to investigate the reservoir characteristics and origin of the Es1 Sandstone. Thin section study showed that the reservoir rock consisted of feldspathic litharenite and lithic arkose. The reservoir pores are categorized as intergranular pores, fracture pores, dissolution pores and intergranular cement dissolution pores. The studied sandstone had good porosity (0.05%–35%) and permeability (0.006–7000 mD). The Es1 reservoir is classified as a fractured reservoir, a primary intergranular pore‐associated reservoir and a dissolution reservoir. Deposition, diagenesis and tectogenesis are the main factors that played important roles in the development of the reservoir. Sedimentation is the foundation and assumption for reservoir development, but the effective reservoir is primarily controlled by primary pores, fractures, lithofacies, tectonic elements and dissolution pores. Moreover, compaction, fracture filling and cementation were the primary sources of reservoir densification. The reservoir was progressively formed through the influence of different geological and diagenetic events. The present study provides significant information and references for hydrocarbon exploration and development in the Nanpu Sag.

The current research aims to unlock the temporal and spatial distribution of sand‐bodies and their relationship with hydrocarbon accumulation in the mid‐deep layer of basin margins, located in the eastern part of the Liuzan area of the Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China. Through this study, the main target interval of the area was divided into two fourth‐order sequences. The lean sand mixed sedimentary belt with great importance in controlling hydrocarbon accumulation was identified through the comprehensive use of 3D seismic data, logging data, lithological data and seismic inversion data. A detailed analysis of sand‐body development characteristics and their role in controlling hydrocarbon accumulation was conducted. The results reveal that the study area mainly develops two distinct fan‐delta lobes from the NE‐trending sediment supply direction. Due to the relatively high influence of the lacustrine transgression event, the scale of the lean sand mixed sedimentary belt within the SQ1‐1 (the lacustrine transgressive systems tract) is relatively small, showing a relatively continuous distribution of sand bodies in the plane. Conversely, due to the relatively high impact of the lacustrine regression event, the scale of the lean sand mixed sedimentary belt developed within the SQ1‐2 (the highstand systems tract) is relatively large, the two east sets of fan‐delta sedimentary systems being clearly separated. The lean sand mixed sedimentary belt formed a good lateral occlusion belt in favor of hydrocarbon accumulation. Through composite analysis of structural interpretation results, sand‐body distribution and well test data, it is evident that the lean sand mixed sedimentary belt located in the structural high is not a favorable zone for hydrocarbon accumulation. In contrast, the wing of the high part of the structure is the zone of sand‐bearing bodies and is a favorable zone of hydrocarbon accumulation.
