Diabetes, Cardiovascular Morbidity, and Risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration in a Primary Care Population

Abstract: The incidence of AMD in the United Kingdom is in line with previously reported incidence rates from population-based studies. The study suggests an association between diabetes, prior eye diseases, cardiovascular comorbidities and AMD risk, and a link between AMD and higher healthcare utilization.

“…Hyman et al [116] and the BMES [117] reported significant associations between AMD and a history of CVD. The AREDS [118] and another BMES [119] found advanced AMD to associate with increased cardiovascular deaths, while the BMES (2008) also found early AMD to associate with increased CVD mortality.…”

The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARCS, [121]) observed a significant association between late AMD and incident CHD in a population at high risk for CHD.…”

“…The most common pathologies responsible for visual impairment and blindness are age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Major eye diseases which result in loss of vision or blindness are age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma [12][13][14] . There are general causes of sudden loss of vision i.e.…”

“…We also hypothesized that the link observed in large populationbased studies between inflammatory markers seen in ischemic cardiovascular disease and neovascular AMD may play a role. 4,5 Given the suspicion by Kim regarding the possible association of macular hemorrhages and visual outcomes, we reanalyzed our cohort and reviewed 147 eyes of 128 patients that had 2 years of treat-and-extend follow-up. The 14 eyes of patients taking clopidogrel were compared with the 133 eyes of patients who had not.…”
