Diabetes and Body Mass Index Are Associated with Neuropathy and Prognosis in Colon Cancer Patients Treated with Capecitabine and Oxaliplatin Adjuvant Chemotherapy

Abstract: Background: There are few background data on the impact of clinical factors on neurotoxicity and prognosis in patients treated with adjuvant capecitabine and oxaliplatin (CAPOX) chemotherapy. Methods: 102 stage II high-risk and stage III colorectal cancer patients were treated for 6 months with adjuvant CAPOX, then they were followed up. Associations between clinical variables, metabolic syndrome components, smoking and neurotoxicity were evaluated by the χ2 test. The Kaplan-Meier product limit meth… Show more

“…Our study is consistent with prior studies that have observed that obesity is a risk factor for CIPN[1922]. Obesity has been reported to increase diabetic neuropathy[23], insulin resistance, and toxic adiposity, and obesity-related complications, including dyslipidemia, may cause diabetic-induced peripheral neuropathy[24].…”

“…Consistent with previous reports in patients with colon cancer who received oxaliplatin 96 and patients with breast cancer who received docetaxel, 97 as well as patients with fibromyalgia 98 and diabetes mellitus, 99 patients with CIN had a higher BMI. As expected, and consistent with recent studies, 78,100 patients with CIN were more likely to have received a combination of a platinum and a taxane compound and had received higher cumulative doses of CTX.…”

“…This has been documented elsewhere 35 and warrants further examination. However, based on our findings BSA alone places patients at increased risk for OIPN because those with obesity-related comorbidities, such diabetes, were excluded from the study.…”
