DHA/EPA (Omega-3) and LA/GLA (Omega-6) as Bioactive Molecules in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Abstract: Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by neuroinflammation, neuronal depletion and oxidative stress. They coincide with subtle chronic or flaring inflammation, sometimes escalating with infiltrations of the immune system cells in the inflamed parts causing mild to severe or even lethal damage. Thus, neurodegenerative diseases show all features of autoimmune diseases. Prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases has dramatically increased in recent decades and unfortunately, the therapeutic efficacy and safe… Show more

“…Additionally, an interaction between the apolipoprotein E phenotype and the high arachidonic acid/docosahexaenoic acid ratios contributed to the pathogenesis of AD . The possible reason was that excessive levels of arachidonic acid might link to neuroinflammation and neuronal damage in the brain, contributing to the pathogenesis of AD . The arachidonic acid is significantly enriched in the brain.…”

“…PUFAs may act as antioxidants by regulating the antioxidant signaling pathway and modulate inflammatory processes. The influence is through the hepatic lipid metabolism [97], physiological responses of other organs such as the heart [98], regulation of platelet homeostasis and lower risk of thrombosis [99,100], modulation of neurodegenerative diseases [101] and skin damage [102,103], among others.…”

“…Additionally, EPA and DHA are involved in lowering the blood cholesterol levels, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. A deficiency of these acids may have an impact on cell death, cognitive function, and brain disorders, as well as the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases [99][100][101].…”
