DFOS Applications to Geo-Engineering Monitoring

Abstract: Optical fiber sensing technology has developed rapidly since the 1980s with the development of the optical fiber and fiber optical communication technology. It is a new type of sensing technology that uses light as a carrier and optical fiber as a medium to sense and transmit external signals (measurands). Distributed fiber optical sensors (DFOS) can continuously measure the external physical parameters distributed along the geometric path of the optical fiber. Meanwhile, the spatial distribution and change in… Show more

“…A polymer-coated Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor has been used for relative humidity sensing [16], but the fabrication of this polymer coating structure is relatively complex and the resulting sensor characteristics are difficult to control. A distributed optical fiber sensor for this type of measurement has been proposed in 2021 by Shi et al -however, an external power supply is also required for this measurement device [17] which can be problematic for its use in some remote locations.…”

“…Gao et al [17,18] applied OFDR technology to measure the strain of PCC pile. Jiang et al [19] used the OFDR technology to measure the strain of the pipeline. Kwon et al [20] used OFDR technology to monitor the stress of anchors of soil slope.…”

“…Since the beginning of the new century, major safety accidents such as the collapse of large-scale underground diaphragm wall bridges and the rupture of bridge decks have occurred frequently all over the world, posing a great threat to the safety of people's lives and property [7]. Therefore, if the status of the underground diaphragm wall bridge structure can be monitored in a timely manner and the damage can be identified, processed, and even repaired in time, the safety of the underground diaphragm wall bridge structure can be greatly improved, and many disasters can be avoided and has very important practical significance and application value [8].…”
