DFIG Topologies for DC Networks: A Review on Control and Design Features

Abstract: The Doubly Fed Induction Machine has been traditionally adopted in adjustable-speed ac power generation drives in order to take advantage of the reduced rating for the power electronic interface. Aside this well-established application where the DFIG is controlled by a back-to-back converter, recent literature records a growing interest towards un-conventional DFIG drives for dc power generation, combining DFIG high control freedom with simplified power electronic interfaces to achieve an overall cheap and ful… Show more

“…The proposed ASPDFIG has many advantages such as high reliability (more reliable under faulty conditions when one or two or more phases fails to compare to the conventional three phase DFIG), low torque pulsation, low per phase current, lower insulation cost, low environmental impact, less area impact, high quality of power production, low harmonic contents in voltage, current and frequency etc. [23][24][25] Further, the proposed machine is easily extendable to a higher number of phases (9,12,15).…”

“…The DFIG is universally known for adjustable-speed ac power generation. Moreover, the utilization of reduced converter ratings decreases the cost of the complete WEGS 14,15 and due to simple and cheap construction, the DFIG is extensively utilized in the WEGS. The various methods to connect the windings (stator and rotor) of DFIG to the grid and back-to-back converter are discussed in Although these squirrel cage induction generators are utilized for wind power generation up to 1.5 MW but they have several disadvantages.…”

“…The FOC control has suffered from the system complexity due to the need for performing several co-ordinates transformation. Moreover, in several cases, the proper design of proportional-integral (PI) current regulators was not ensured which resulted in deteriorating the transient response of the system [28,29]. Some attempts have been carried out to make the selection of the PI gains more precise as in [30,31], which used the neural and fuzzy systems to optimally select the gains.…”

“…The novel six-phase wound rotor induction generator (SPWRIG) has features of multiphase technology as well as excellent attributes of conventional induction generator [8][9][10], this feature makes it highly efficient and faults tolerant machine. The elegant advantages of SPWRIG are lower converter rating required, cost-effective power electronics converter can be used, harmonic reduction, high reliability, lower insulation losses, simultaneously for dc power generation point of view twelve-pulse rectifier can be exchange with six-pulse rectifiers with the help of SPWRIG [11]. The SPWRIG can be used at remote locations, military operations, electric drives, ship propulsion etc.…”
